Sebokeng sergeant and Meyerton constable arrested for kidnapping granted bail after court appearance

April 11, 2024

Two police officers, Sergeant Isaac Mathe Mokalolise (39) from Sebokeng and Constable Phumlani Dlamini (30) from Meyerton, appeared before the Khutsong Magistrates’ Court on charges of kidnapping and defeating the administration of justice.

Detailing the accusations against the officers, National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana, said: “The two officers, along with two unidentified accomplices, allegedly approached the complainant at his residence on 13 March 2024, using a state vehicle. They claimed to have evidence belonging to him at the police station and insisted he accompany them. Despite the complainant’s denial, they coerced him into the vehicle, displaying their service cards for perceived legitimacy.”

Mahanjana added: “Instead of heading to the station, the officers drove in the opposite direction. When the complainant questioned this, the accomplices reportedly threatened him with a firearm. Fortunately, the complainant spotted his brother’s car and began shouting for help. His brother, witnessing the distress, pursued the vehicle and managed to stop it.”

The intervention of the complainant’s brother and an off-duty police officer present at the scene proved crucial.

“The off-duty officer, recognizing a potential crime, escorted the accused officers back to the station, where they were arrested,” said Mahanjana.

The court proceedings revealed the officers’ intention to plead not guilty and their request for a R1000 bail. However, the NPA argued for a stricter bail amount due to the severity of the charges. The Magistrate ultimately agreed with the state, granting the officers bail of R5000 each.

As part of their bail conditions, the officers are prohibited from entering the Merafong district, leaving their jurisdiction without informing investigators, contacting state witnesses and possessing or acquiring firearms while employed.

The case has been postponed to 26 April for further investigation.
