Victory for women in boxing: Monica Mkandla and team shine at GSports Awards
It was a night of triumph for women in boxing at the GSports Awards Red Carpet Celebration on Saturday, 30 August. Professional boxing star Monica Mkandla was crowned Africa Woman in Sport, a prestigious title that she describes as a dream come true.
Already the unbeaten ABU Sadac Champion, this latest recognition cements her status as one of Africa’s leading women in sport. Adding to the celebration, Bonita Van Jaarsveldt, Mkandla’s teammate, received the Ministerial Certificate of Excellence in the Special Recognition category.
Their mentor and manager, Colleen McAusland, also stood proudly as a finalist, showcasing the strength of the entire team.“I’m incredibly proud of my girls. They work and train tirelessly to create opportunities in boxing. I thank GSports for recognising them and giving women in sport the platform to be seen and appreciated,” said McAusland.
With three finalists and two major wins, the night was a powerful statement: women in boxing are claiming their space and shining on Africa’s biggest sporting stages.
