Lakeside Multipurpose Centre opens on youth Day
The Midvaal Local Municipality marked Youth Day officially opening a new Multipurpose Centre in Lakeside, creating a space aimed at supporting community development and youth empowerment.
The opening coincided with the commemoration of 50 years since the 1976 Soweto Uprising, a day that honours the courage and sacrifice of young people who fought for quality education and freedom.
The celebrations also featured the annual Mayoral Youth Games, where young athletes competed in netball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, chess and indigenous games, showcasing their skills, determination and sportsmanship.
Sharing the news on social media, Midvaal Executive Mayor Peter Teixeira said: “Today, 16 June, as we commemorate 50 years since the Soweto Uprising, we proudly celebrated this historic occasion by officially opening a brand-new Multipurpose Centre in the heart of Lakeside.”
He added: “Together, we continue to create opportunities, develop talent, and build a brighter tomorrow.”
The event brought together residents, athletes and community stakeholders in a celebration of youth development, unity and progress, while highlighting the municipality’s continued investment in facilities and programmes aimed at empowering young people.
