Three suspects killed in Alberton shootout after high-speed chase

Three suspects were fatally wounded during a shootout with law enforcement officers following a high-speed chase in Alberton.

The incident unfolded during a multidisciplinary operation targeting suspects allegedly linked to business robberies, hijackings and other violent crimes in Gauteng.

The operation involved SAPS Crime Intelligence Head Office MDOC, the Gauteng Tactical Response Team, Gauteng Anti-Gang Unit, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, CAP Specialised Operations, Tracker Connect and Midvaal Peace Officers.

According to police, intelligence led the team to the Roodekop area, where the suspects were believed to be operating.

During the operation, authorities received information that an armed robbery had taken place at a residential property in Roodekop, where a businessman was allegedly robbed of cash.

Officers later spotted a Toyota Corolla travelling at high speed with its registration plates removed.

When law enforcement officers attempted to stop the vehicle, a high-speed pursuit followed. Police said gunfire was exchanged before the vehicle eventually came to a stop.

Three suspects were fatally wounded during the incident.

Police recovered three unlicensed firearms and ammunition at the scene. Cash believed to have been taken during the robbery was also recovered from the vehicle and the suspects.

Preliminary investigations have linked the suspects and vehicle to other business robbery cases, including one reported in Mondeor in July 2022 and another in Meyerton in August 2026.

Investigations into the suspects’ possible involvement in other crimes are continuing.
