Department of Agriculture announces new rules for importing and exporting live animals

April 11, 2024

The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) has important information for businesses involved in importing and exporting live animals. New directives have been introduced regarding the authorization process.

According to Reggie Ngcobo, spokesperson for the DALRRD, these changes aim to strengthen compliance with the Animal Improvement Act (AIA) of 1998. Effective immediately, authorization for importing or exporting live animals and their genetic materials must be obtained through the AIA.

What This Means for Businesses:

  • This applies to all existing veterinary import permits issued before April 1, 2024.
  • Companies seeking new permits should first obtain an Animal Improvement Permit which must be attached when applying for a Veterinary Import Permit from the department.
  • For those with existing veterinary import permits issued under the Animal Diseases Act of 1984, valid Animal Improvement Permit copies must be included with future applications.

Important Exceptions:

  • Game animals, wild animals, cats, birds, and fish are exempt from requiring an Animal Improvement Permit for import purposes.

The department encourages businesses to familiarize themselves with the new directives. For more information, contact the DALRRD or visit their website.
