Midvaal Libraries celebrates National White Cane Day 2023

October 16, 2023

In recognition of National White Cane Day, Midvaal Libraries, organised a significant event at the Meyerton Library on Friday, 13 October, to support and empower visually impaired members of our community. This annual observance, celebrated on the 15th of October, highlights the significance of the white cane as a symbol of independence and mobility for individuals who are visually impaired.

National White Cane Day serves as a platform to raise awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with visual impairments while promoting pedestrian safety and the rights of people with visual disabilities. It’s a day that emphasises the importance of inclusion and accessibility in our society, allowing everyone to lead a fulfilling life.

The white cane is not just a tool for the visually impaired; it is a beacon of hope and a symbol of resilience. It provides an extra sense of security and independence for those who rely on it. Through the white cane, individuals with visual impairments can navigate their surroundings with increased confidence.

At the event, representatives from Midvaal Libraries introduced the visually impaired community to the services and resources available to them at the library. These services aim to make literature, information, and resources easily accessible to all members of the community, regardless of their visual abilities.
